John joined Foxrock as a junior member in the 1960’s, from his earliest days made a mark for his exceptional length and power.

As an amateur in 1969 he was runner up to V. Nevin in the Irish Amateur Close at Rosses Point. He was a member of the Irish team in the European Amateur Team Championship, and in 1969/70 played for Ireland in the Home Internationals in twelve matches of which he won five and halved two.

In 1968/70 he played for Leinster in the Inter-provincials, winning twelve and halving one of his eighteen matches. In 1970 played for Ireland against Europe.

In 1970 he was also the winner of the South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship beating G A Young of Kilrush by one hole in the final, and was runner-up in the West of Ireland Amateur Open, beaten in the final by J McTear of Scotland, 4 & 3.

John turned professional shortly after and had a very successful career.

He was a member of the Ryder Cup team in 1975, and in 1982 won the Irish Open at Portmarnock.

He has held a number of positions within the European Tour organisation and also chaired the Tournament Players Committee.
